Frequently asked questions
A few answers to understand how Screen Buddy respects your family's privacy.
About Screen Buddy
What is Screen Buddy?
Screen Buddy is a screen-time companion designed to be used with your child, not on their behalf. Parent and child choose the activity and duration together, then the timer walks alongside the session until a gentle, predictable ending. The app encourages conversation, not surveillance.
Is this a parental control app?
No, and it does not replace one. Screen Buddy does not block any application, does not filter any content, does not monitor what is watched on screen. If you need to restrict access to certain apps or filter websites, use your operating system's built-in controls (Screen Time on iOS, Family Link or Digital Wellbeing on Android). Screen Buddy is a complement, not a substitute.
Why a collaborative approach?
Because rules imposed from one side work less well than rules chosen together. By involving the child in the decision (activity, duration, ending), we help them build their own sense of time. Visible timer, positive messages, announced transitions β everything is designed so the child cooperates rather than endures.
How does the reward system work?
At the end of each successful session (child agrees to stop), they earn a medal. After N medals (configurable in the profile, default 5), a personalized reward unlocks β something you decide together in advance: a park trip, a Friday movie, a special activity. Medals reset after each reward to keep momentum.
And data protection?
Everything stays on the device: no account, no cloud, no trackers, no ads. Avatar photos stay local. No internet connection is required. See the "Privacy & data" section for the full details.
Privacy & data
Where is my child's data stored?
Everything stays on your device, in the app's private storage. No data is sent to any server or cloud. If you uninstall Screen Buddy, all data (profile, sessions, settings) disappears with the app.
What data is collected?
Only what you voluntarily enter: first name, avatar, reward description, screen sessions, settings. No analytics, no third-party trackers, no ads, no advertising identifier.
Does the app need internet?
No. Screen Buddy works entirely offline. No network connection is required for regular use.
How can I erase my data?
From the History screen, the "Clear" button deletes all sessions. Uninstalling the app removes all data at once (profile, settings, medals).
Are photos I pick as avatars shared?
No. The photo URI stays local to the app. No image is uploaded, and the app only accesses the file you explicitly picked.
Usage
Can I manage several children on the same device?
Yes. From Settings β πΆ Children, add as many profiles as needed. Each child has their own first name, avatar, limits, reward, medals and sound. The active child changes with a tap on the avatar on the home screen.
Can I sync between the parent's phone and the child's tablet?
No: no data ever leaves the device. Each installation is independent, with no cloud or account. To share settings, you need to re-enter them on the other device.
What happens if I close the app during a session?
The running session is kept and resumed at the next launch. Time spent outside the app is not automatically deducted.
What age range is the app for?
Designed for collaborative parent-child use between ages 4 and 10. The WHO recommends zero screens before age 3 and less than 1 hour/day between ages 3 and 6.
Is the parent code secure?
It's a simple lock, stored locally, meant to prevent accidental taps by the child β not cryptographic security. Use a code your child cannot trivially guess.
How can I receive an automatic screen-time recap?
In Parent settings β π Parent report, choose the frequency (daily, weekly or monthly), the day and the hour. A notification will arrive at the chosen time; tapping it opens the stats screen. To disable, pick "Off". The notification is silent and discreet, with no aggressive sound.
How do I transfer my data to another tablet?
In Parent settings β πΎ Data backup, "Export" generates a JSON file with profiles, sessions, medals, settings and language. Send it via email or store it in a cloud, then on the other tablet use "Import" and select that file. Warning: import replaces the current state β confirm the replacement dialog carefully.
